Investigators are looking into the cause of a structure fire on the property of a man recently arrested and charged with the deaths of Cristie Schoen-Codd, Joseph “JT” Codd and their unborn baby

Firefighters responded to a fire on Owens Cove Road in the early morning hours of March 20. Chief Chris Brown, with the Leicester Fire Department, said the structure was “fully involved,” engulfed in flames, when firefighters arrived around 2 a.m. last Friday.

The structure is on the property of Robert Jason Owens, 37, who was arrested March 16, and charged with two counts of first-degree murder and murder of an unborn child. Owens and his wife live in another structure on the property, several yards away from the structure fire.

Investigators arrived on the scene of the fire shortly after 8 a.m. on March 20. In a press conference later that day, Buncombe County Sheriff Van Duncan wouldn’t comment as to any connection to the deaths of the Codds. He did say the fire is being treated as suspected arson.

Owens remains in the Buncombe County Jail with no bond.
